Montauk Fishing

Family trout fishing at Montauk State Park...

(updated Sat. June 18, 2016)

On one of our Boy Scout campout/fishing trips at Montauk State Park, I learned that the Missouri Conservation Department sponsors Kids Fishing Days.

The Trout parks have their own separate fees, which help fund the hatcheries.

On these weekends:

  1. 1)the fees are waived for kids

  2. 2)special areas are dedicated to only kids fishing

    - parents / adults can help the kids, but kids are supposed to catch and reel the fish close to shore... parents can help with the net, stringers (keep the fish in the water before take out to clean and gut, etc.), hooking the lines, etc.

    - the kids areas are over-stocked, and MDC team members help give tips... their goal is that every kid catches at least one trout... and they are then “all smiles”

    - adults can fish, just in other areas of the parks

The Kids Fishing Days are typically the Saturdays in May, and each park has a dedicated weekend.

Abby and I went to Montauk State Park in 2015, camping in our tent Friday night through Sunday morning.

Missouri’s Trout fishing regulations limits you to only catching four trout per day (once you do, you can catch no more fish at all), and you can only have up to eight in your possession at any point in time (on stringer, in refrigerator, in freezer, etc.).

Abby caught her limit each day - four on Saturday and four on Sunday.

We all had a great dinner when we got home Sunday!

It was the first weekend in May, 2015 when Abby and I visited - the nights were quite chilly, but the days were warm but not yet hot.
