Family Summer Vacation 2016

Day 4-7

Photo Op Bike Ride

Photo Op #5 - the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, the Catholic Cathedral

Photo Op #6 - Lodge Alley

Photo Op #7 - Philadelphia Alley

Photo Op # 13 - Longitude Lane

Photo Op # 14 - Stolls Alley

Andrea the concierge had shared with Abby and Dad a photo map of Charleston's best Photo Ops, and showed us a photo album of the photos we could take ourselves if we followed the map.

We decided to first see the Photo Op #5 - the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, the Catholic Cathedral

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g54171-d1209845-Reviews-Cathedral_of_Saint_John_the_Baptist-Charleston_South_Carolina.html

Mom and Matt visited the Mary grotto and flowers and Dad and Abby went inside

Dad went to the confessional and Abby took some photos

The Church is very pretty inside... Tall white walls and pillars leading your eyes up to heaven... And white high altar and some amazing stained glass windows on the wall and in the clerestory

•The baptism of Jesus above the high altar

•Lower level:

oJesus' crucifixion

oJesus' Baptism, with "Behold the Lamb of God"

•Clerestory:

oSt. Theresa and St. Bridget

oSt. Francis Xavier and St. Patrick

oSt. Cecelia and St. Agnes

oSt. Anthony and St. Francis of Assisi

We got some lunch a block or two away.  Since we were so close, we decided to ride a block or two away and see the Cathedral from the top of the parking garage... Photo Op #4 - Bird's Eye View of the Cathedral

We walked up the stairs in the heat and the sun hit us when we got out from under the roof

But the view of the Cathedral and its garden / Mary grotto were nice to see.

We captured some photos and then went downstairs

Right where we parked our bikes Abby found a pretty purple flower, whose petals all grouped into a round ball-like shape

Along the ride, Abby saw some of these fuzzy flowery things that we didn’t know the name of.

For dinner we went to The Swamp Fox Restaurant, in the Francis Marion hotel.  Both are named for the Revolutionary War hero from South Carolina.  We recommend the restaurant!

As we left there was a rainbow high in the sky

A couple’s photo, on Ann Marie’s birthday!

On our last morning, before departing, we had one last bike tour.  We saw:

  1. -Photo Op #6 - Lodge Alley and it’s framing the view of St. Philips Church’s spire.

  2. -Photo Op #7 - Philadelphia Alley
A neat, long alley that was thankfully shaded.
Abby set up the tripod on her bike post for a couple awesome family photos!
In the alley, and as we departed Abby took some awesome flower photos - amazing zooms and macro photos.

  3. -Photo Op # 13 - Longitude Lane
This alley "will make you feel like you have stepped back into the 17th
A nice lady took our family photo against the blue shuttered house
As Dad took the other photo against the facing house, Mom noticed how tall Matt is - 5’ 10”!

  4. -Photo Op # 14 - Stolls Alley
This is a neat long alley that has a wrought iron gate and gas lamp at one side and the battery an ocean at the end

Abby captured many great photos of an amazing number of flowers, in window boxes, in just a quarter or half mile of riding near Philadelphia Alley.  These are just some of those photos.

On the way back to the hotel we passed St. Philips Church.  This is the same Church whose steeple we photographed from Lodge Alley.

(yes... captured while riding... thanks to the amazing Olloclip Studio’s finger grip - http://vanvooren.us/Photography/SmartPhone_Cameras.html)

As we drove, departing for Hilton Head, Matt photographed a Nissan Fairlady Z, which he also edited the way he does so well (as does Abby).

We had an amazing time in Charleston, never leaving the Historic District.

We look forward to visiting again.
