Summer Vacation 2018 - Hawaii

Paddling our own outrigger canoe in the open Pacific ocean... past the breakwater
Snorkeling on King Kamehameha’s beach
Snorkeling on the Ironman Triathlon beach - Niamalu Beach

Kona Boys operates snorkeling and canoeing and other outdoor activities. They have a hut on Kim Kam Beach, right between the hotel pool and the water. We talked with them and learned that they also host outrigger canoe trips, so we signed up.
It was fun, and easier than we expected.
Matt quickly secured his GoPro HERO4 to the crossbar that is between the canoe and the outrigger. Then, we were paddling.
We learned that on an outrigger, different from a canoe, you’re supposed to all paddle on the same side then to the other... but not changing every stroke... paddle several to the right then several to the left. We made it out in the open water. The view of Kailua Bay was pretty. Dad and Abby both jumped into the water, like we did in the Snake River last summer.
Ryan was our guide and he shared that the big house next to the hotel, just past Kamehameha’s temple is owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen... nice. An internet search shows this is true - it is one of Paul Allen’s many homes.
It was a nice ride and we now know that it takes a lot of work to get from island to island and much more to get 2,000+ miles from Tahiti to Hawaii.
Thank you, Ryan, for the fun afternoon!

We also snorkeled a couple times in Kim Kam Beach and also snorkeled once in the beach where they start the Ironman Triathlon.
We saw:
-yellow tang... many many many yellow tang
-Achilles tang (dark blue/black with orange)
-blue parrotfish
-kihi kihi - pennant fish with “the long white hair” trailing back off the top of their heads
-Moorish Idols
-one long yellow trumpetfish
