SLUH, and Ultimate Frisbee

Seeing school from the plane as we flew home

Our son attends SLUH / Saint Louis University High School, the oldest school west of the Mississippi, founded in 1818.

We’re proud of him, and of our daughter, who’s attends school at Holy Infant in Ballwin.

Our son joined the SLUH Ultimate Frisbee team his freshman year, and looks to play in upcoming years.  He started playing ultimate back in Cub Scouts, where he and other Scouters surprised us with an epic game one morning between waking up and having breakfast... he caught a “touchdown pass,” landing on his knees and then thrusting the disc high in the air.  Another reason why I’m proud to be his dad.

Last summer, when in Vail, Matt and I tossed his SLUH frisbee a few times... above 8,000 feet!

This year, he brought it with us, and we tossed it, on land and in the water, on all three islands.

Our last day, we visited Kalapaki Beach.  While there, a few of our throws landed in the water, and the disc, waves and sand made for impressive images.

On the flight from LAX to STL, we flew toward downtown and u-turned back toward the airport.  I was distracted, then realized where we were, and then realized I just missed a photo of SLUH from the plane.

I said “tip the wing, just tip the wing,” and two seconds later the pilot did just that... and this image opened up.  Thank you, Captain!

This stained glass window radiates beautiful light throughout the SI Commons / Saint Ignatius (of Loyola) Commons at SLUH / St. Louis University High School.

This image is inspired by the original, Our Lady of the Way (Santa Maria della Strada), which inspired St. Ignatius to start the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits.

Many thanks, and continued blessings, to all who helped make this devotional window possible at SLUH.

More about Our Lady of the Way:

“Our Lady of the Way (Santa Maria della Strada) is a feast celebrated by the Society of Jesus in its communities, schools and parishes.

“The late medieval mural of Santa Maria della Strada was on an external wall of the small chapel of Our Lady of the Way in Rome. It was here that Ignatius prayed and eventually set up the headquarters of his new Society. Ignatius would have known the image well and, throughout his life, had a particular devotion to Our Lady under whose patronage he placed the Society of Jesus.

“The small chapel of Santa Maria della Strada was demolished to make way for the Church of the Gesù, begun in 1568 and consecrated in 1584. The image was preserved and is today in the north chapel, having recently undergone restoration.”

A prayer, from St. Ignatius...
